Adapted Park Explorers (8-12 yrs.)

(10-13 yrs.) Join us on outdoor adventures for nature lovers who don't mind being outside and getting dirty. Campers will explore different features of the park through hands-on science and nature activities tailored to young people with disabilities. Experiments, games, activities, and observation skills help us explore our park. Bring a snack and drink. This camp is designed for kids with disabilities who can participate in a 4:1 ratio and can maintain personal care. No camp July 3.


All About Owls Campfire

(4-Adult) Barred owls inhabit our stream valley parks. Learn to identify these owls from other native owls while enjoying the campfire. Toast marshmallows over the embers. Canceled in case of inclement weather. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Animal April Fools

(4-8 yrs.) Dive into the art of deception in the animal kingdom. We will explore examples of how animals have adapted to blend seamlessly into their environments, outwit predators and enhance their survival strategies. Get ready to be fooled by animals' adaptions.


Animal Vets (6-11 yrs.)

(6-11 yrs.) Get up close with our exhibit animals. Campers will feed the critters, check their health, weight and size and journal findings in their vet notebook. Camp includes hikes, games and activities daily. Bring a lunch, snack and drink. Wear old clothes.


Animals: Zoology Fun for Kids (6-11 yrs.)

(6-11 yrs.) Explore the woods, creeks and ponds as we look for all sorts of critters. Learn about the animal life science of frogs, toads, birds, mammals, snakes, turtles, fish and insects through hikes, projects and games.


Are You Going to Eat That?

(10-Adult) Enjoy a naturalist-led hike and identify plants that are safe to eat and which ones to avoid. Learn the usefulness of plants for such rope making and folk remedies with connections to Eastern Woodland Indians. Meet at the visitor center.


Baroody STEM Adventures (8-11yrs)

(8-11yrs.)Join Baroody camps to delve into various aspects of STEM, exploring topics such as robotics, chemistry, coding, and game design. Our hands-on approach includes interactive experiments such as creating potions and crafting slime, as well as problem-solving activities like developing robotic contraptions.


Bird Study Merit Badge

This program satisfies most of the requirements to earn the badge. Scouts must complete all prework before the start of class. Pre-work and program details available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/scouts. Scouts unable to complete all requirements may receive partial credit from their merit badge counselor.


Boardgames and Bird Walk

(12-Adult) Hone your birding skills on the trail and learn to play our favorite bird themed board game: Wingspan. We will enjoy a round or more of this wonderful boardgame and take a bird walk in the park. All skill levels welcome.


Campfire Night Hike - Predators at Night

(4-Adult) Enjoy a night hike to learn about nocturnal hunters. Listen to taped calls of owls and coyotes and possibly catch a glimpse of them in the forest. End the evening with s'mores round the campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.


Chess Camp (6-13yrs)

(6-13 yrs.) This Silver Knights camp has taught the great strategy game to more than 100,000 children including national champions. This camp is for advanced players to sharpen their skills or beginners who want to learn the game. Campers will learn the rules, openings, tactics, strategy, endgames, while playing games and taking outdoor breaks. Bring a lunch, snack, and drink. Campers will receive a t-shirt and chess set on Friday. No camp June 19 and July 3.


Creeks & Critters (6-10yrs)

(6-10 yrs.) From tadpoles to meadow voles, water is needed for all living things. Join us for this mostly outdoor camp as we explore many features of the watershed and learn about animals that depend on it. Be prepared to get wet, do cool experiments and learn how humans affect the quality of water in our rivers and streams.


Critter Crawl

(2-6 yrs.) Walk with a naturalist and your child as we investigate the critters who make this park their home. Children must be accompanied by an adult.


Dark Sky Patch - Daisy and Brownie

(5-9 yrs.) This patch will help you understand the importance of dark skies and how you can protect this resource. You will learn about light pollution, see the effect of light pollution yourself, learn how you can make changes to reduce light pollution, and share what you have learned with others. This program was made possible by support from the Fairfax County Park Foundation. Patch included.


Dinosaur Days Camp (4-6 yrs.)

(4-6 yrs.) Campers will become junior paleontologists as naturalists lead discovery of the latest in dinosaur knowledge through crafts, games and fossils. Campers in the 4-hr. camps should bring a lunch. No camp June 19.


Engineering Design Process (8-11yrs)

(8-11 yrs.) This hands-on camp introduces campers to the Engineering Design Process—a powerful framework used by real engineers to solve problems, create prototypes, and bring bold ideas to life. Campers will work individually and in teams, developing critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience with Youth Technology Network instructors. All materials and equipment provided.


Environmental Science Merit Badge

Feeding Day

(4-13 yrs.) Join a naturalist as they demonstrate how we feed our site display animals. Make a birdfeeder to take home and use. Search for worms and insects and assist in serving dinner. Children must be accompanied by an adult.


Frog Karaoke Campfire

(4-Adult) Bring your best frog voice as you learn about our native frogs while enjoying refreshments at a campfire. Hop along with a naturalist to our pond to sing with the chorus.


Full Moon Nature Hike and Campfire

(6-Adult) Enjoy nature's tranquil beauty and the night sky under a full moon. Your naturalist guide points out signs of creatures that glide, fly and tiptoe through the woods in the dark. Enjoy a campfire after the hike with s'mores provided. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Herbal Tea in the Garden 

(8-Adult) Come to the garden to learn about and pick fresh herbs that will make your herbal tea the best its ever been. Sample herbal teas and get inspired to grow your own tea herbs at home to delight and inspire you. 


Homeschool Biology - Birds

(8-15yrs.) Students receive hands-on instruction in wild bird identification, migration, habitats and conservation through citizen science. Instructors use preserved species, and wild birds to illustrate the concepts. All lessons are structured around the Virginia standards of Learning.


Homeschool Biology - Our Living Watershed

(8-15 yrs.) Dive into watershed education at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Receive hands on lessons about aspects of watershed education in a variety of water environments. Topics to include macroinvertebrate searches and identification, watershed ecology, life cycles, food chains, stream monitoring techniques, pollution problems and watershed protection. All lessons are structured around the Virginia Standards of Learning.


Homeschool Botany

(8-15 yrs.) Delve in into the wonders of our local plants with hands-on activities and nature exploration in this four-week course. Sessions include searching for early spring wildflowers and other botanical signs of spring, discovering native herbaceous (non-woody) plants that stay green in winter, learning about identifying native trees by buds, bark, and fruit, and investigating the diversity and beauty of mosses in the park.


Insect Safari (4-6 yrs)

(4-6 yrs.) Come on a safari and explore bugs and insects that inhabit our natural areas. Collect, examine and identify little creatures using magnifiers and microscopes. Learn about their important jobs as pollinators and decomposers through projects and scientific investigations.


Invasive Plant Identification Walk

(8-Adult) Identify some of Fairfax County's common invasive plant species. Explore ways to lessen these plants around your home.


Little Earth Keepers

(2-5 yrs.) Introduce your little ones to the wonders of nature with hands-on activities that teach environmental stewardship and sustainability. Your little earth keepers will learn how their actions can help protect our planet. Adults must participate with children. 


Little Gardeners

(2-6 yrs.) Explore the ever-changing landscape of the garden. Each week, participants will explore and discover the changes in the garden. This program will feature seasonal activities that can include planting seeds, pollinators, harvesting vegetables, digging in the soil and exploring plant parts. Adults must attend with a registered child. 


Minecraft & Computer Science (6-12 yr)

(6-12 yrs.) Stem exCEL campers will use programming fundamentals to design and implement large-scale Minecraft modifications. Hands-on activities will take place at the beginning of camp that introduce vital concepts then use the easy drag-and-drop interface to create programs, solve problems and design games. Next, campers will learn functions, variables and conditionals. No camp July 3.


My First Lemonade Stand (6-9 yrs.)

(6-9 yrs.) Campers become "lemonade entrepreneurs" and learn how to make lemonade and earn money selling it with SPARK Business Academy. Design marketing flyers, estimate profits and experiment with recipes. Campers launch the lemonade stand on Friday to raise money for a charity they select.


Native American Survival Skills Camp (6-11 yrs.)

(6-11 yrs.) Discover what daily life was like for the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. From animal tracking to shelter building, children learn survival skills through outdoor activities, games and more. Camp focuses on the culture and lives of the Powhatan. Some sites include tool making and a cookout on the last day.


Nature Storytelling

(3-6 yrs.) Explore the parks through books. Hear a story, enjoy nature activities, take a short hike, and finish with a craft. Topics will change seasonally. A parent must accompany each registered child in the program.


Nature Tots

(1-3 yrs.) Bring your toddler to explore nature through sight, sound, smell and touch. Programs include indoor and outdoor activities. Adult must be able to participate with children. A different amazing topic every month
