Groundwork and Horsemanship Program

(8-Adult) A hands-on introduction to working with horses from the ground. Participants learn grooming, leading, horse communication, and daily barn care in a small-group setting. No riding involved. Participant Readiness & Safety Requirements: Participants must be able to walk independently on uneven barn footing (sand, gravel, and arena surfaces), use their hands to safely interact with a horse and equipment, follow verbal directions, and maintain safe behavior around horses and others. This program is not wheelchair accessible at this time. New participants may be contacted prior to the session to confirm program fit.


Horseback Riding - Beginner (8-14 yrs.)

(8-14 yrs.) For students who have not taken riding lessons before. This class teaches the basics of riding and caring for horses. Class will primarily focus on riding skills. Unmounted horsemanship lessons will be offered during inclement weather. Student weight must not be more than 175 lbs.


Horseback Riding - Beginner Riding II (8-14 yrs.)

(8-14 yrs.) Prerequisite: Students must have taken Horseback Riding Beginning for three previous sessions with SPIRIT. Riders will build on skills learned in the Beginner class. Class will primarily focus on riding skills. Unmounted horsemanship lessons will be provided during inclement weather. Student weight must not exceed 175 lbs.


Therapeutic Horseback Riding (4-Adult)

(4-Adult) Class is open to new and returning students with developmental, emotional, neurological and physical disabilities. Therapeutic riding teaches safe and effective horsemanship in a group setting. Each lesson is focused on improving the development of balance, fine and gross motor skills, confidence and communication. The teacher-to-student ratio is 4:1, with trained volunteers supporting each student’s individual needs. Class will primarily focus on riding skills, and unmounted horsemanship lessons will be provided during inclement weather. Student weight must not exceed 175 lbs. A medical form from SPIRIT is required.


Therapeutic Horseback Riding II (4-Adult)

(4-Adult) Prerequisite: Students must have taken Therapeutic Horseback Riding I at SPIRIT for three previous sessions. Advancement is based on the rider's abilities, needs and personal progress. Class will primarily focus on riding skills. Unmounted horsemanship lessons will be provided during inclement weather. Student weight must not exceed 175 lbs. A medical form from SPIRIT is required.
