The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

Acrylic Painting (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Learn acrylic painting basics. Bring a small canvas and painting supplies if you have them. Supply fee of $30 payable to instructor at first class.


Animation Drawing (10-18 yrs)

Learn how to make your characters move and come to life. Students learn how to make a flip-book and other techniques. Supply fee payable to instructor at the first class.


Art Above and Beyond (6-12 yrs)

This mixed-media class offers a variety of fun projects including drawing and painting. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Big, Bold Blooms (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Students create paintings of various sizes using acrylics. Students explore color and design composition, perspective and other elements of design to create authentic and original works. Supply list provided prior to first class.


Cartooning (6-12 yrs)

Sharpen your drawing skills, learn how to develop characters and illustrate background to create cartoons. Students must bring a sketch pad and black soft lead pencils (4B and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class or supply list distributed at the first class.


Digital Photography (13-Adult)

There's more to photography than just using the automatic setting. Topics include your camera's controls, resolution, flash, composition, stop motion, close ups and more. Course includes weekly assignments with reviews. Software and printing are also covered. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class. ~


Digital Photography II (13-Adult)

Prerequisite: Digital Photography I or equivalent.

Learn color shading, blending and color harmony using pencils and colored pencils. Bring a sketch pad and pencils (4B, HB, and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Draw With Me! (6-12 yrs)

Students and an adult family member learn color shading, harmony, blending and drawing basics. Students work with pencils and colored pencils. Both parent and child should bring a sketch pad and pencils (4B, HB and 2H) to class. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Explore Drawing & Painting (13-Adult)

Floral Design Workshop; Summer Edition 16+

(16-Adult) Create a beautiful summer flower arrangement with the help of certified floral designer Betty Ann Galway. Learn how to properly care for and handle flowers along with learning creative design ideas. Supply Fee $30.


Intro to Pastel at Huntley Meadows (16-Adult)

This class offers an introduction into soft pastel painting, a fun and forgiving medium to use. Local pastel artist Teresa T. Brunson demonstrates pastel painting techniques, mark-making, layering and other tips. All supplies are provided.


Landscape Painting (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Students will use design elements such as lines, shapes, values and spatial relation, to create landscape paintings. Students construct and deconstruct landscapes from realism to abstract. Bring watercolor paper and water-based medium watercolors or acrylics. Additional supply list provided before start of class.


Oil/Acrylic Painting I (Adults)

Learn basic skills including methods and materials. Students with some skill refine and enhance personal styles. Composition, color theory and paint handling are stressed while painting figures, landscapes and still life. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class. Continuing students may bring their materials.


Paint in Oil or Acrylic (Adults)

Paint under the instruction of a proficient artist to improve your skills and build confidence as an artist. For beginning to advanced students. More experienced painters may bring their supplies. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class. ~


Pottery - Handbuilding (16-Adult)

Introduction to intermediate instruction using pinch, slab and coil methods to create either functional or abstract pieces. Glazing and techniques for textures and other decorations are included. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay and three hours of lab time. ~

Introduction to clay and the pottery-making process using hand-building methods. Make pinch pots and learn coiling, slab work techniques, painting, glazing and firing.


Pottery for Parent and Child (6-12 yrs)

Students and an adult family member learn clay-working basics and the pottery making process using hand-building methods. Make pinch pots and learn coiling, slab work techniques, painting, glazing and firing.


Pottery I (16-Adult)

Introduction to the potter's wheel with emphasis on clay preparation, centering, firing and glazing. Attendance at first class is essential. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay and three hours of lab time. Supply fee for tools is required. ~
