The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

Awesome Acrylics Paint & Sip (13-Adult)

One painting per class is demonstrated from start to finish, then students paint a 16 x 20 canvas each class as we listen to good music, laugh, and sip a fizzy, non-alcoholic beverage. No experience necessary. Supply fee of $30 payable to instructor at class.


Calligraphy-Carolingian (Adults)

Prerequisite: Prior Calligraphy class or equivalent experience. This beautiful hand was developed in 9th century France and is a must for any calligrapher's repertoire.


Calligraphy-Copperplate (Adults)

Introduction to the pointed pen and the formal script hand, beginning with the traditional form and progressing to more modern variations. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Cartooning (6-12 yrs)

Sharpen your drawing skills, learn how to develop characters and illustrate background to create cartoons. Students must bring a sketch pad and black soft lead pencils (4B and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class or supply list distributed at the first class.


Digital Photography (13-Adult)

There's more to photography than just using the automatic setting. Topics include your camera's controls, resolution, flash, composition, stop motion, close ups and more. Course includes weekly assignments with reviews. Software and printing are also covered. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class. ~

Prerequisite: Digital Photography I or equivalent.


Discover Drawing (13-Adult)

This course teaches fundamental drawing skills through various techniques and projects. Students need to bring an 11'x14' sketch pad and two drawing pencils (HB & 6B). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.

Discover Painting (13-Adult)

This course provides a basic introduction painting fundamentals. Students learn basic painting skills and techniques to create simple works of art. Practical exercises include simple sketching, use of color theory and application and basic composition.

Discover Printmaking (6-12 yrs)

Learn woodblock and monograph printing techniques on a variety of materials including one wearable piece. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class for set of safe carving tools


Draw with Color (6-12 yrs)

Learn color shading, blending and color harmony using pencils and colored pencils. Bring a sketch pad and pencils (4B, HB, and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Drawing Comic Strips (8-12 yrs)

Prerequisite: Cartooning I. Learn to create a cartoon comic strip by turning a funny story and your unique character into a series of funny drawings using pencil sketches, inking and color to express your humor. Create your own cast of characters, settings and drawing style in classic comic strip layouts. Bring to class a 2B pencil, eraser and a sketch pad. List of required art supplies provided at first class.


Drawing Feathers (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Feathers are beautiful! Join naturalist and artist Avery Gunther to learn how to draw feathers with colored pencil on toned paper. Learn about feather identification, watch a demonstration about how to draw feathers and draw feathers in this interactive class. Paper will be provided for a small fee. A suggested list of supplies will be provided when you sign up. "

(16-Adult) Sea shells are so beautiful and fun to collect! Join naturalist and artist Avery Gunther to learn how to draw sea shells on toned paper. Use colored pencil, pen and ink or gel pen to create your shell renderings. Paper will be provided for a small fee. Watch a demonstration on how to draw shells. A suggested list of supplies will be provided when you sign up.

Floral Design Workshop-Spring Bulbs 16+

(16-Adult) Enjoy the colors of spring indoors with a beautiful spring bulb flower arrangement. Learn about the special conditioning and design considerations of working with bulbs from certified designer Betty Ann Galway as she leads you through creating this gorgeous spring bulb design for you to take home. Materials provided for $30 supply fee.


Floral Design-Contemporary Pave Arrangement 16+

(16-Adult) Certified Floral Designer Betty Ann Galway shows you the techniques for constructing and balancing a beautiful, contemporary, pavé floral arrangement of grouped flowers. Pavé design groups flowers in a grid, like a paver, to gorgeous, modern effect. Make your own pavé, grouped flower arrangement to enjoy at home. Later, use your container to practice what you learned. Materials provided for $30 supply fee.


Ikebana Floral Design Workshop for Adults

(16-Adult) Ikebana is a Japanese art of flower arrangement. Learn its rich symbolism and fundamentals and take home your own arrangement. Materials provided with $25 supply fee.


Imaginative Realism Painting (13-Adult)

Learn how observations and imagined elements can be brought together through classical painting methods to create unique paintings. Using a time-tested six-step method, artists make detailed studies and gradually integrate them into a larger work avoiding the disjointed and out of place elements that are so hard to avoid in imaginative work.


Impressionistic Realism Painting (13-Adu

Using the Boston School and American Impressionism methods, students learn to create paintings which combine the color of Impressionism with the finish of the Old Masters. Students learn still-life painting using high-contrast, bright edges and low-contrast blurs to form an instant optical impression that slowly resolves into a realistic painting with an emphasis on hierarchy of contrast and color.


Italics (Adults)

Italics is the most versatile of alphabets. In addition to miniscule and majascule, variations and flourishing, students are taught to mix watercolor gouache paint to make colored ink and experiment with the colored ink or different colored papers. Bring your tools. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Knitting (13-Adult)

Master knitting basics. Students learn knitting techniques and terminology and how to choose materials.


Knitting II (13-Adult)

Prerequisite: Knitting I. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Little Dolls for Busy Hands (6-12 yrs)

Students make several simple dolls while exploring different techniques and media. Skills include knotting, braiding, drawing and more. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Nature Sketch Hike (13-Adult)

Join a naturalist at Lake Fairfax Park for a hike focused on observing the shapes and colors found in nature and learn sketching techniques to enhance your observation skills.


Oil/Acrylic Painting I (Adults)

Learn basic skills including methods and materials. Students with some skill refine and enhance personal styles. Composition, color theory and paint handling are stressed while painting figures, landscapes and still life. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class. Continuing students may bring their materials.
