The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

Acrylic Painting (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Learn acrylic painting basics. Bring a small canvas and painting supplies if you have them. Supply fee of $30 payable to instructor at first class.


Art Above & Beyond (5-7 yrs)

This mixed-media class offers a variety of fun projects including drawing and painting. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.

This mixed-media class offers a variety of fun projects including drawing and painting. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Calligraphy (Adults)

Introduction to supplies, including dip pen and sumi ink, and terminology. Instruction focuses on miniscule and majuscule (Roman capitals) and unical. You also learn layout and design, and produce a final product. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Cartooning (6-12 yrs)

Sharpen your drawing skills, learn how to develop characters and illustrate background to create cartoons. Students must bring a sketch pad and black soft lead pencils (4B and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class or supply list distributed at the first class.


Collage & Photography at Huntley Meadows 16+

Artist Kathryn Coneway leads students in creating art inspired by the beauty of Huntley Meadows Park, combining collage explorations of color and texture with imagery from photos taken in the park. Class will include time walking and observing in nature as well as time creating in the classroom. Participants will work in layers over several weeks and learn practices with mulberry paper, acrylic and photo transfer. All supplies are provided.


Digital Photography (13-Adult)

There's more to photography than just using the automatic setting. Topics include your camera's controls, resolution, flash, composition, stop motion, close ups and more. Course includes weekly assignments with reviews. Software and printing are also covered. Any supply fee payable to instructor at first class. ~


Digital Photography II (13-Adult)

Prerequisite: Digital Photography I or equivalent.


Discover Drawing (13-Adult)

This course teaches fundamental drawing skills through various techniques and projects. Students need to bring an 11'x14' sketch pad and two drawing pencils (HB & 6B). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.

Draw with Color (6-12 yrs)

Learn color shading, blending and color harmony using pencils and colored pencils. Bring a sketch pad and pencils (4B, HB, and 2H). Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Draw With Me! (6-12 yrs)

Students and an adult family member learn color shading, harmony, blending and drawing basics. Students work with pencils and colored pencils. Both parent and child should bring a sketch pad and pencils (4B, HB and 2H) to class. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Drawing Animal Eyes (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Animal eyes are so varied and intricate. If you draw an animal’s eye realistically, your drawing of an animal comes to life. Practice drawing individual animal eyes up close from photographs and live animals. Watch a demonstration, then try drawing eyes using pencil, colored pencils and/ or watercolors. A suggested list of supplies will be provided when you sign up. $5 material fee due at first class


Drawing Comic Strips (8-12 yrs)

(8-12 yrs) Learn to create a cartoon comic strip by turning a funny story and your unique character into a series of funny drawings using pencil sketches, inking and color to express your humor. Create your own cast of characters, settings and drawing style in classic comic strip layouts. Bring to class a 2B pencil, eraser and a sketch pad. List of required art supplies provided at first class.


Drawing Workshop-Insect Illustration

(16-Adult) Use your basic drawing skills to accurately render insect anatomy for a beautiful finished illustration. Artist and instructor Caroline Hottenstein shows you how to use pen and ink, watercolor, graphite, and colored pencils to capture and highlight details. Your finished project is a 2D specimen board using color media of your choice. Please bring a bag lunch. Previous drawing experience encouraged. Supply list will be emailed before class.


Explore Drawing & Painting (8-12 yrs)

Explore techniques including concepts of shape, line, texture and color mixing. Bring an 11' x 14' sketch pad and two drawing pencils (HB & 6B). Supply list or supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Fall Tree Pastel Painting (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Learn to paint beautiful fall trees with their multi-colored leaves using soft pastels. Local pastel artist Teresa T. Brunson demonstrates ways to paint with pastels and illustrates the many expressive ways they can be used, as well as painting techniques, mark-making and layering. All supplies provided.


Floral Design Workshop-Fall Flowers & Foliage

(16-Adult) Enjoy autumn’s rich colors and textures by bringing them into your home. Learn how to create a unique, take-home floral design that celebrates the season with the help of professional floral designer Betty Ann Galway. Learn tips and tricks of the trade to practice on your own designs at home. Supply fee $30.


Floral Design Workshop-Fruits & Vegetables

(16-Adult) Fruits and vegetables make beautiful features in floral arrangements if you know how to use them. Certified floral designer Betty Ann Galway will show you which edibles work well in in flower arrangements and demonstrate techniques for incorporating them. You will go home with a stunning arrangement of flowers and edibles to accent your home. Supply fee $30.


Floral Design Workshop-Indian Summer 16+

(16-Adult) Enjoy the flowers of late summer in this floral design workshop. Certified floral designer Betty Ann Galway walks you through this jewel tone arrangement for your home. You will come away saying, “I can’t believe I made this beautiful arrangement.” Supply fee $30.


Fun with Clay! (6-12 yrs)

Students make a variety of simple projects with clay while learning the basics of working with clay. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Illustrating Your Nature/Travel Journal

(16-Adult) Learn how to take your field sketches and turn them into a journal page. Starting with a pencil sketch you can add fine line marker, watercolors or colored pencils. Participate in a lesson of how to use various art media each class. Discover ways to add your photos and mementos to your journal. A suggested list of supplies will be provided when you sign up. $5 material fee due at first class.


Intro to Pastel at Huntley Meadows (16-Adult)

This class offers an introduction into soft pastel painting, a fun and forgiving medium to use. Local pastel artist Teresa T. Brunson demonstrates pastel painting techniques, mark-making, layering and other tips. All supplies are provided.


Italics (Adults)

Italics is the most versatile of alphabets. In addition to miniscule and majascule, variations and flourishing, students are taught to mix watercolor gouache paint to make colored ink and experiment with the colored ink or different colored papers. Bring your tools. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Knitting (13-Adult)

Master knitting basics. Students learn knitting techniques and terminology and how to choose materials.


Knitting II (13-Adult)

Prerequisite: Knitting I.


Landscape Painting (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Students will use design elements such as lines, shapes, values and spatial relation, to create landscape paintings. Students construct and deconstruct landscapes from realism to abstract. Bring watercolor paper and water-based medium watercolors or acrylics. Additional supply list provided before start of class.


Little Dolls for Busy Hands (6-12 yrs)

Students make several simple dolls while exploring different techniques and media. Skills include knotting, braiding, drawing and more. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class.


Natural Dye Workshop (16-Adult)

(16-Adult) Learn the basics of creating a natural dye bath with foraged plants, flowers, and dye extracts, with the help of textile artist An-Phuong Ly. Using plant derived dyestuffs and other natural materials, experiment with various colors and learn about the ways to prepare fabric for dyeing. Learn about the history and practice of natural dyeing, the origins of dyestuffs and colors, and the science behind the process. Take home a hand-dyed piece. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained and bring an apron and rubber gloves. Supply fee $25.


Nature Drawing (Adults)

(Adults) Join local naturalist and artist Margaret Wohler on the trails to learn about and draw the plants and animals that live in Huntley Meadows Park. Class focuses on basic drawing skills, color theory, perspective, shading, gesture, contour and realistic rendering. All supplies included.


Oil/Acrylic Painting I (Adults)

Learn basic skills including methods and materials. Students with some skill refine and enhance personal styles. Composition, color theory and paint handling are stressed while painting figures, landscapes and still life. Supply fee payable to instructor at first class. Continuing students may bring their materials.
