The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

ARC Wilderness & Remote First Aid 15+

(15-Adult) This American Red Cross course will provide individuals a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services (EMS) response. This includes wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.


Birding for Beginners

(12-Adult) Interested in birding? We can get you started. Learn about the park's birds and some basic identification skills. Program begins with an indoor discussion. Children age 12 to 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Birding on the Boat (8-Adult)

Enjoy a naturalist led bird program aboard a tour boat. This voyage gives you a closer look at some of the birds and animals that call the Burke Lake home. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Burke Lake Sunset Cruise (2-Adult)

Join us for an early evening tour of the lake. Enjoy the sounds and sights of sunset at the park while taking in the views from aboard the parks tour boat. The tour includes interpretation of the lake and any animals and flora that are seen. The cruise begins half an hour before sunset and returns half an hour past sunset.


Fall Family Campout (5-Adult)

Bring the family out to Burke Lake Park Campground. Camping with your family promotes bonding, increases self-confidence and gives you a better appreciation of nature all while having fun. Your family will enjoy a naturalist lead night hike, a family movie in the campground and a live animal talk. Then wake up and head to the marina for a tour boat ride and fishing from the banks. Program starts at 2pm on Saturday and ends at 11am on Sunday. One registration per family.


Fall Foliage Kayak Expedition (13+)

(13-Adult) Enjoy a new perspective of fall colors at Lake Accotink this season aboard one of our kayaks. Our expedition takes us to the northern part of the lake to see glorious natural tunnels of orange, yellow and red leaves. Previous kayak experience is necessary.


Fall Foliage Tour Boat Ride (5-Adult)

Late October and early November is the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful fall colors in Fairfax County. Join us for a special tour that captures the beauty of fall from our pontoon boat's unique perspective. The tour includes a one-hour ride and a hot beverage. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Full Moon Boat Tour (6-Adult)

Enjoy a picturesque night under the full moon aboard the Burke Lake Park tour boat. Test your listening and observation skills to spot local wildlife with one of our naturalists.


Geocaching Workshop (8-Adult)

Students learn to use hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) units to locate hidden treasure caches within Burke Lake Park. After learning how to enter latitude and longitude coordinates into a GPS, students follow the coordinates to find a hidden object, container or unique geological feature. Bring your own GPS; a limited number are available to borrow from instructor at class.


Intro to Kayaking (12-Adult)

This introductory-level class is perfect for beginners or for those who want to learn how to paddle more efficiently. Learn about different kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices and safety gear. On the water, learn to move the boat in every direction using forward and reverse strokes, a turning stroke, a slice stroke and stopping maneuvers.

This introductory-level class is perfect for beginners or for those who want to learn how to paddle more efficiently. Learn about different kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices and safety gear. Intro to River Kayaking (14-Adult)

Get prepped for paddling on the Potomac. This introductory level course covers river hazards, water safety and paddling basics. Fee includes equipment and half-day kayak rental (same day only). Canceled if inclement weather or hazardous river conditions.


Kayak Tour-Seneca to Riverbend (14-Adult

This eight-mile river journey begins in the lazy waters above the old Seneca Dam. Then this lake-like stretch the pace quickens through riffles and small rapids as we weave through Seneca Breaks, glide past Watkins Island and finally turn the bend to Riverbend. Previous kayaking experience is required for this tour. Kayaks provided, one person per kayak. Download waiver and bring completed forms to tour. https://go.usa.gov/xnJUB. Kayak Tour-Wildlife of the Potomac 14+

Watch for deer foraging on the islands, osprey and bald eagles searching for fish and more as we paddle through this wildlife-rich section of the Potomac River. This is not a whitewater tour. Night Kayaking (13-Adult)

Enjoy Lake Accotink after dark in a kayak. Many nocturnal animals come out after dark and the view from a kayak is a great way to see them. Bring flashlights and dress for the activity.


River Fishing by Boat (5-Adult)

Fish for smallmouth bass and sunfish from a canoe or jon boat. Get started with an introduction to boating and fishing basics. Previous experience rowing or paddling not required. Boats and PFDs provided. Fishing rods and bait provided. Canceled if inclement weather or hazardous river conditions. Maximum three participants per boat, one of whom must be 16 or older. Each participant must register.


Stand Up Paddleboarding (14-Adult)

Paddle a beautiful section of the Potomac River from a kneeling or standing position. This beginner class has a low student/instructor ratio to allow for plenty of personal instruction. PFDs and helmets provided. Maximum participant weight is 225 pounds.


Stand Up Paddleboarding for Fitness 14+

Experience a new way to get fit while enjoying the sun and water from our new SUPs on the Potomac River. This class begins with basic maneuvers and techniques while building skills and increasing fitness. All equipment provided.
