The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

Bagels & Birds (6-Adult)

(6-Adult) Join a naturalist at Royal Lake for a fall bird hike. Enjoy a light breakfast and then walk around the lake looking for migrating birds.


Birding for Beginners

(12-Adult) Interested in birding? We can get you started. Learn about the park's birds and some basic identification skills. Program begins with an indoor discussion. Children age 12 to 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Birding for Intermediates

(16-Adult) Are you looking to improve your birding skills? Come along and learn some additional tips using binoculars, spotting scopes, and using bird behavior to identify different species.


Birding on the Boat (8-Adult)

Enjoy a naturalist led bird program aboard a tour boat. This voyage gives you a closer look at some of the birds and animals that call the Burke Lake home. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Camping Skills 101

(7-Adult) Learn some hands-on basic camping skills before you head out. Discuss packing and safety skills, and learn how to build a fire, pitch a tent, set up a campsite and more.


Fishing by the Stream

(2-Adult) Meet at Cabell's Mill. Join a naturalist a go fishing along Rocky Run stream. Learn about native fish and receive tips on equipment and techniques. Beginners welcome. Bring your own fully rigged fishing poles; worms provided for bait. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Fishing Fun (7-11 yrs)

(7-11 yrs) Learn fishing basics while having fun. This class helps improve fishing skills with spinning- and closed-faced reels while teaching safety, catch-and-release fishing and protecting the environment. All equipment is provided. Supply fee of $20 payable at first class.


Fishing Workshop-Reading Water (10-Adult)

Hone your fishing skills in this workshop. Learn how to identify bodies of water and develop techniques to increase your chances of catching fish.


Fishing Workshop-Tackle (10-Adult)

Hone your fishing skills in this hands-on workshop. Topics include tackle, rods and reels.


Full Moon Boat Tour (6-Adult)

Enjoy a picturesque night under the full moon aboard the Burke Lake Park tour boat. Test your listening and observation skills to spot local wildlife with one of our naturalists.


Geocaching Workshop (8-Adult)

Students learn to use hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) units to locate hidden treasure caches within Burke Lake Park. After learning how to enter latitude and longitude coordinates into a GPS, students follow the coordinates to find a hidden object, container or unique geological feature. Bring your own GPS; a limited number are available to borrow from instructor at class.


Get Ready for Warbler Migration

(Adults) Learn or refresh your warbler calls and identification skills with this engaging educational session. Common warbler migrants of Huntley Meadows will be covered.


Intermediate Mountain Biking (13-Adult)

(13-Adult) Expand your mountain biking experience and take your skills to the next level. Helmets required. Bring your own mountain bike, water and dress for the weather. Class meets rain or shine.

Kayak the Marsh at Lake Accotink (13-Adult)

Paddle Lake Accotink's tranquil waters with a naturalist guide for an early morning view of wildlife. Glide past bald eagle nests. No previous experience required. Single-seat kayak and life preserver provided. Boaters younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program. Canceled in case of rain or unfavorable water levels.


Kayak Tour-Seneca to Riverbend (14-Adult

This eight-mile river journey begins in the lazy waters above the old Seneca Dam. After this lake-like stretch the pace quickens through riffles and small rapids as we weave through Seneca Breaks, glide past Watkins Island and finally turn the bend to Riverbend. Previous kayaking experience is required for this tour. Kayaks provided, one person per kayak. Download waiver and bring completed forms to tour. https://go.usa.gov/xnJUB. Night Kayaking (13-Adult)

Enjoy Lake Accotink after dark in a kayak. Many nocturnal animals come out after dark and the view from a kayak is a great way to see them. Bring flashlights and dress for the activity.


Orienteering Workshop

(8-Adult) Orienteering is the sport of navigation with map and compass. It's easy to learn, but always challenging. Participants learn how to use a compass, read a topographic map and navigate orienteering courses. Compass required.


Spring Family Campout (5-Adult)

Spring is here! Come join us and take advantage of warmer days and crisp nights that are perfect for sitting around the campfire. Burke Lake Park is the perfect setting for a family campout and we’re making it even better. Join us for planned events such as a campground orientation, a reptile and amphibian show, guided night hike, campfire with s’mores, tour boat ride, fishing with a naturalist and a canoe or rowboat rental for each family. All the programs above and one campsite with one bundle of wood is included with each registration. One registration per family.

(4-Adult) Learn about migration; the amazing journeys birds undertake and what we can do to protect them. Explore the park, and take home something memorable!
