Ancient Plants Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Huntley’s forests are home to certain plants whose ancestors have been with us since dinosaur times. Join artist and naturalist, Margaret Wohler, to learn about and sketch the ferns, moss and their allies on a 1.5 mile walk (flat terrain). Bat Night

(6-Adult) Join a naturalist to discover the facts, fiction and folklore about nature’s only true flying mammal- bats! We will set the record straight about these incredible but often-misunderstood group of animals. The program will start with a presentation followed by a night walk where we will use a special acoustic device to listen for and identify bat calls not heard with the human ear.


Birding for Beginners (12-Adult)

(12-Adult) Learn about the park's birds and some basic identification skills. This program for beginners starts with a bird identification discussion. Children age 12 to 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Catch a Critter!

(4-Adult) Grab a net and join us for a special day with a park scientist to see, touch, and study wetland creatures up close and personal. Use magnifying lenses to study their unique characteristics. This rare opportunity to dip-net in the wetland is possible through the guidance of our park naturalists.

Eco-Engineers Camp (6-11 yrs.)

(6-11 yrs.) Builders, inventors and experimenters wanted! Join our park naturalists as we search for inspiration from nature’s engineers- honeybees, beavers, birds and plants. Test out different materials to create things that blend in, shelter, float or fly. Explore the great outdoors using nature as inspiration to create your own inventions. Homeschool Science-Wetlands are a Natural Treasure

(6-12 yrs.) What environmental factors need to come together to create a wetland habitat? Join us as we learn about this regionally rare habitat and discuss the importance of wetlands to wildlife and people and how we can protect them. Indoor discussion followed by a guided park tour. We use exploration, observation and lab skills to explore this topic.

Class focuses on basic drawing skills, color theory, perspective, shading, gesture, contour and realistic rendering. Emphasis is on experience over product. All supplies included.


Nature Quest (8-12yrs)

Reptile Rangers Camp (4-6 yrs.)

Science for Wizards (7-11 yrs.)

(7-11 yrs.) Explore science with this spell-binding camp filled with an array of bewitching lessons and experiments mesmerizing even the most astute sorcerer. Secrets, Spies, Sputnik and Huntley

(Adults) Take a stroll with us on the less-visited side of the park to uncover the history of spies, espionage and how the Cold War struggle between the US and the USSR shaped Huntley and the Fairfax County we know today. Meets at South King Highway entrance includes a 2.4 mile walk over flat terrain.


Signs of the Beaver Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Join artist and naturalist Margaret Wohler to learn about Huntley's nocturnal engineers by studying and drawing the tracks and traces they leave behind. We will learn about the lives of beavers, have a little basic drawing instruction, and then go hiking to find signs of beaver activity. All art materials provided.

(6-Adult) Join a naturalist for a discussion and a guided walk to listen for serenading frogs and toads. Learn the calls of a bull frog, southern leopard frog, green frog, tree frog and American toad.


Twilight Boardwalk Stroll

(6-Adult) Join a park naturalist for a guided walk along the forested paths to the wetland and experience the park as it transitions from day into night. Watch and listen for nocturnal residents such as beavers and owls.


Vines Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Have you seen those twisty-turny wild grape vines in the Huntley forest that would make Tarzan proud? How about our abundant poison ivy? Have you heard of Hog Peanut? Join artist and naturalist Margaret Wohler to learn about Huntley's many vine species while learning to draw and identify them. All art materials provided.


Water Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Drawing water can be made a little less tricky by learning a few techniques. Rippled, still or running, we will learn all about how water behaves. Wetland at Dusk Walk

(Adults) Join park naturalists for a relaxing stroll through the park's forest and wetland paths. Look and listen for wildlife settling down or waking up during the transition of day to night.

(6-11 yrs.) Discover water dynamics and wetland habitats. Explore how the living and non-living interact in a wet ecosystem. Wetlands Awareness Day

(All Ages) Celebrate the significance of Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax County Park Authority’s premier wetland sanctuary, by discovering the beauty and importance of wetlands during this fun and free event. Bring friends and family to stroll the forested paths and immersive ½ mile boardwalk trail to learn about the plants and animals that live in the park. See live raptors, reptiles and amphibians up close and enjoy interactive displays and activities. Collect a stamp at each station to receive a prize. Rain or shine.


Wild About Art (6-11 yrs)
