The Fairfax County Park Authority offers a variety of activities such as classes, camps and tours in a wide variety of categories including aquatics, fitness, nature, dance, outdoor recreation, performing arts, history and many more. Special events, trips/tours and specialty workshops are listed in Parktakes, the Park Authority’s quarterly guide, available through free subscription to county citizens. .

Birds of Prey

Seeing a bird of prey in the wild is exhilarating. Raptor bander John Shafer guides you to hot spots in search of wintering and resident hawks and owls. The trip begins with a multimedia presentation to review the fine points of identifying and aging raptors drawn from his experiences banding hawks and eagles. Bring binoculars. We'll stop for a meal or bring a bag lunch to eat on the go. Dress for the weather. Youth under age 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Tour departs at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park visitor center at 10 am and returns at 6 pm.


Blackwater Birds, MD

Travel to Blackwater Wildlife Refuge on the Delmarva Peninsula. View endangered fox squirrels, waterfowl, hawks and eagles. Bring binoculars and a bag lunch. Dress for the weather. Van departs from Packard Center, Annandale District Park at 7am and returns at 5pm. Trip cancelation deadline is November 3, 2018. ~


Mount Vernon & Huntley, Lives Bound Together Tour

Includes van transportation and admission. A letter from Huntley is on exhibit at Mount Vernon! See the letter and discover how slavery links Huntley and Mount Vernon. Includes tours of the slave quarters at Mount Vernon and Huntley as well as the mansion houses. Lunch is on your own in cafeteria. Program begins at 10am then and departs Historic Huntley at 11 am. Van returns at 3 pm. Trip may be cancelled in case of severe inclement weather. Trip cancelation deadline: February 13, 2019.


Philadelphia Flower Show

Includes motor coach and admission. The 2019 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, Flower Power, ties in to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. This year's show will also be hosting the Florists Transworld Delivery World Cup, a floral design competition. Each competitor representing a different country will make four different floral designs, al of which will be on display. Bring a lunch or enjoy the atmosphere and food of the Reading Terminal located across the street. Bus pick-up/return schedule is: Fair Oaks Mall- depart 7am, return 9pm; Mason Government Center- depart 7:30am, return 8:30pm: LeeREC- depart 8am, return 8pm. Trip cancellation deadline: February 15, 2019. ~

Vikings Beyond the Legend, Philadelphia, PA

.Journey back to Scandinavia in the Viking Age in this exhibit at the Franklin Institute. While Vikings engaged in invading and pillaging, their societies were complex and multifaceted. They were skilled craftspeople, successful merchants and hard-working farmers whose influence was felt across Western Europe and beyond. This exhibit brings people from the Viking period to life with a wealth of unique objects, multimedia productions and interactive elements revealing the captivating story of the explorers who set sail from Scandinavia centuries ago. Washington Underground (Adults)

Discover treasures hidden beneath the Washington metro area's roads and monuments. Tour includes a peek into the tunnels beneath the Capitol. Additional admission fees may apply. Trip departs Burke Lake Park ice cream parlor at 10am and returns at 5pm.
