Amphibian Disco Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Come learn about how Huntley's amorous amphibians are shaking up the Spring wetland. We will start with a short lesson on amphibian biology and basic drawing skills then hit the boardwalk to sketch the frogs, toads and salamanders that make the park so much noisy fun. A field art kit is included in the registration fee thanks to support provided by RunningBrooke.

Bat Night

(6-Adult) Join a naturalist to discover the facts, fiction and folklore about nature’s only true flying mammal- bats! We will set the record straight about these incredible but often-misunderstood group of animals. The program will start with a presentation followed by a night walk where we will use a special acoustic device to listen for and identify bat calls not heard with the human ear.

Birding at Huntley

(12-Adult) Over 200 species of birds have been identified in the forests, meadows, and wetland habitats of Huntley Meadows Park. Each season brings new feathered residents, for brief or extended stays. Grab your binoculars and join a park naturalist on your next birding adventure! All skill levels welcome.


Birding for Beginners (12-Adult)

(12-Adult) Learn about the park's birds and some basic identification skills. This program for beginners starts with a bird identification discussion. Children age 12 to 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Boardwalk Astronomy

(8-Adult) Join park naturalists as they take you on a tour of constellations, comets and other current events happening in the heavens above. Children must be accompanied by adult also registered.


Butterfly Sketch Hike

(12-Adult) Join park naturalist and artist Margaret Wohler for a hike focusing on butterflies and learn sketching techniques to enhance your observation skills.


Catch a Critter!

(4-Adult) Grab a net and join us for a special day with a park scientist to see, touch, and study wetland creatures up close and personal. Use magnifying lenses to study their unique characteristics. This rare opportunity to dip-net in the wetland is possible through the guidance of our park naturalists.

Colonial Life for Homeschool

(6-12 yrs.) Did you know that Huntley Meadows Park was once part of George Mason's holdings? Discover this forgotten Founding Father as you make your own candle, design your own stencil to mark crops, write with a quill pen and decide the future of the Virginia colony.

Corn Grinding & Clay Pottery

(4-Adult) How did the Powhatan Native Americans use the plants and animals you see every day for their medicine, grocery store, clothing and fun? Immerse yourself in a way of life 400 years ago. Grind corn, make a clay pot, master corn darts and go on a guided tour to see the park from the perspective of a Virginia Indian.


Draw Cute Wetland Animals

(6-Adult) Take a naturalist-guided walk through Huntley Meadows Park, and learn how to draw simple and cute renditions of the wildlife you see. Drawing tools will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Evening Woodcock Walk

(Adults) Take an evening stroll through the forest to one of the park's largest meadows. Listen for the call of the male woodcock and hopefully see his amazing courtship dance and flight. Bring a flashlight. Approximately 1.5 mile walk on uneven terrain. Canceled if it rains. Meets at the South Kings Highway entrance to the park.


Family Owl Outing

(6-Adult) Discover the secret world of owls. Learn what makes these raptors excellent night predators with a presentation followed by a trail hike to hopefully hear or spot one of Huntley's resident owls. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


First Aid Merit Badge

Forces of Nature (6-12 yrs.)

Homeschool Science - Introduction to Archaeology

(6-12 yrs.) Discover how scientists learn about the history of human life through ground excavation and analysis of artifacts. The material objects humans left behind can tell us about their culture and how they lived. Become junior archaeologists as we examine real artifacts and participate in a mock dig. Can you solve the mystery we will uncover?


Homeschool Science - Introduction to Mammalogy

(6-12 yrs.) Join park naturalists to study the branch of biology that studies and observes mammals. Learn how mammals interact with their habitats, other wildlife, and their contributions to the ecosystem. We will also discuss anatomy and physiology. Use scientific instruments to enhance your observation skills. Examine preserved specimens followed by outdoor exploration into their natural habitat.


Homeschool Science-Introduction to Entomology

(6-12 yrs.) Discover why insects and their partners, bugs, shouldn’t be overlooked. These amazing creatures help the ecosystems they live in stay healthy. Join a naturalist to explore the diverse habitats of Huntley Meadows Park to learn about insects and their usefulness using scientific instruments and observation. Examine preserved specimens followed by outdoor exploration to find and identify live insects.


Homeschool Science-Introduction to Ornithology

(6-12 yrs.) Explore how bird adaptations allow birds to live in their chosen ecosystem. Study the parks collection of preserved specimens. Followed by outdoor observations and exploration using field tools to learn identification and classification.


Homeschool Wilderness Skills-Spring (7-12 yrs)

(7-12 yrs) Join a Park Naturalist to identify hazardous and harmless plants and animals that become active in the spring season. Expand your knowledge to identify edible and medicinal plants. Learn how to create a portable camp stove, make a fire, build a shelter and utilize the power of teamwork when faced with a challenge. Any supply fee payable to instructor at class.


Homeschool-Sketching through History & Science

(6-12 yrs.) Did you know that 100 years ago, most field scientists were accomplished artists? Without portable cameras, biologists needed a way to capture their discoveries, and art was their tool. Study the techniques used in making a field sketch page, learn some basic drawing skills, and get to know the stories of long ago explorers and scientists. A field sketch kit is included.


Insect Safari (4-6 yrs)

(4-6 yrs.) Come on a safari and explore bugs and insects that inhabit our natural areas. Collect, examine and identify little creatures using magnifiers and microscopes. Native American Survival Skills Camp (6-11 yrs.)

(6-11 yrs.) Discover what daily life was like for the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. From animal tracking to shelter building, children learn survival skills through outdoor activities, games and more. Camp focuses on the culture and lives of the Powhatan. Nature Drawing (Adults)

(Adults) Join local naturalist and artist Margaret Wohler on the trails to learn about and draw the plants and animals that live in Huntley Meadows Park. Class focuses on basic drawing skills, color theory, perspective, shading, gesture, contour and realistic rendering. Emphasis is on experience over product. All supplies included.


Nature Quest (8-12yrs)

Netting for Bugs

(4-Adult) Join park naturalists for a fun day using sweep nets to catch flying insects and roll logs to look for life beneath the leaf litter like slugs and worms. Use a magnifying glass to get up close to examine these amazing tiny animals and learn about their fascinating lives. This rare opportunity to catch animals is possible through the guidance of our park naturalists. Children must be accompanied by registered adult.
