Archaeology at Sully

(6-Adult) Explore the Past Through Archeology at Sully Historic Site. Delve into the rich history of Sully Historic Site through the fascinating lens of archeology. Participants will discover how the artifacts left behind by past residents reveal the stories of their lives and this place. Using hands-on activities, visitors will explore archaeology tools, techniques and procedures. Join us to uncover the layers of history and connect with the past. This program links to the VA250 and the Fairfax250 commemoration.


Archaeology Merit Badge

This program satisfies most of the requirements to earn the badge. Scouts must complete all prework before the start of class. Pre-work and program details available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/scouts. Scouts unable to complete all requirements may receive partial credit from their merit badge counselor.


Dig It: Archaeology Adventures (9-12yrs)

(9-12 yrs.) Dig in the soil to find treasures from the past. Campers will learn about the people of Fairfax County and their interaction with land over time from the found artifacts. Discover how scientists use techniques like ground excavation and artifact analysis to decode the mysteries of history.


Excavation Investigation (7-11yrs)

(7-11 yrs.) Dig deep into Virginia’s history, from the age of the dinosaurs and ancient plants through the revolutionary war to current times. Try your hand at archaeology while you handle artifacts found right here at Green Spring. Explore local geology and learn about the secrets of soil and the critters that live beneath our feet. Featuring daily nature walks, crafts, and experiments. This program links to the va250 and Fairfax250 commemoration.


Revolutionary Ideas: Fairfax History Conference

Join historians, scholars, educators, and community members for a full day of exploration and discovery focused on Fairfax’s role in the American Revolution. As Fairfax marks #Fairfax250, this conference examines the causes, conflict and consequences of the Revolution—and how the county shaped, and was shaped by, this pivotal moment in history. Through engaging presentations, panels led by George Mason University faculty and students, and interactive afternoon activities for all ages, participants will explore stories of both famous figures and everyday people whose ideas and actions helped change the course of history. The program also features hands-on archaeology activities, genealogy sessions, digital research tools, student research exhibits and opportunities to connect with local history organizations. This free conference is presented as part of the Virginia American Revolution 250th Commemoration (VA250).
