Archaeology at Dusk Campfire

(4-Adult) What do woolly mammoths, spear-throwing, and campfire cooking have in common? Join archaeologists around the fire to discover Riverbend's hidden histories and learn about lifeways of the first people living along the Potomac. S’mores provided. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Canceled if raining or inclement weather.


Astronomy Festival

(3-Adult) Enjoy activities including guided star gazing, looking through the telescope, and listening to ancient stories about the constellations round the campfire. Participate in other activities and games throughout the evening. Hot chocolate and snacks available for purchase. Canceled if raining or snowing.


Bears in our Backyard Campfire

(4-Adult) Have you seen a bear in Fairfax County? Identify bear habitat, life cycles, sights and sounds and learn to be a good bear neighbor. This program concludes with a s'mores campfire.


Campfire Fridays

(3-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire the whole family can enjoy. During the program we will explore the wonders of our natural world. Our programs may include nature walks, interactive activities, animal presentations, or other opportunities to learn about nature and our place in it. Includes S’mores. Topics vary by date. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Campfire Night Hike - Predators at Night

(4-Adult) Enjoy a night hike to learn about nocturnal hunters. Listen to taped calls of owls and coyotes and catch a glimpse of them in the forest. End the evening with s'mores round the campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.


Campfire Safety for Families

(4-Adult) Families learn how to safely build and enjoy a campfire plus make s'mores. Not appropriate for children under 4 yrs. Children must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered in the program.


Campfire Saturdays (4-Adult)

(4-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire the whole family can enjoy. During the program we will explore the wonders of our natural world. Campfire Wagon Ride

(2-Adult) Enjoy an intimate after hours experience at the farm as day turns to night. Register for a wagon ride time and enjoy the bonfire before or after your ride. Staff will provide marshmallows for roasting but feel free to bring along any other treat for yourselves.


Coyote Campfire

(4-Adult) Satisfy your curiosity and your sweet tooth with one howling campfire. Listen to coyote calls, take a short hike, and make s'mores as you learn about this wily canine. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Fall Family Campout (5-Adult)

Burke Lake Park is the perfect setting for a family campout and we’re making it even better. Join us for planned events such as a campground orientation, guided nature programs and hike, DIY campfire and s’more supplies, tour boat ride and fishing. All the programs above and one campsite with one bundle of wood is included with each registration. Program starts at 2pm on Saturday and ends at 11am on Sunday. One registration per family.


Family Nature Campfire

(All Ages) Join a naturalist to learn about local wildlife and enjoy a cozy campfire with s’mores. Up to 9 people in your family or COVID bubble group. Masks required. Great for celebrating a family birthday. Rescheduled in event of severe weather.


Flying Squirrel Campfire

(4-Adult) Enjoy an evening around the campfire, toasting marshmallows over the embers and learn about flying squirrels that live in our area. Cancelled in case of inclement weather. Children must attend with an adult and all attendees must register.


Frog Karaoke Campfire

(4-Adult) Bring your best frog voice as you learn about our native frogs while enjoying refreshments at a campfire. Hop along with a naturalist to our vernal pools and streams to sing with the chorus


Haunted Pond (6-12 yrs)

(6-12 yrs.) This nocturnal wildlife and local lore program features a craft, a twilight walk into the forest, a campfire with spell-binding stories, s'mores and more. Scary stories told in the last 30 minutes.

(3-6 yrs) This nocturnal wildlife and local lore program features a craft, a twilight walk into the forest, a campfire with spell-binding stories, s'mores and more. Not-so-scary stories told in the lat st 30 min. We don't want to frighten you.


Holidays at Walney Farm

(4-Adult) Celebrate the winter holidays with the families that lived at Walney Farm. Take a holiday food walk, learning about preservation for the new year and meals for the holiday. Create a historic holiday ornament, play historic games and enjoy treats and cider around the campfire.


Hot Dog, Smores! Wagon Ride & Campfire

(4-Adult) Meets at Cabell's Mill. Enjoy a turkey hot dog supper roasted over the campfire and a brisk wagon ride through the Rocky Run stream valley. Discover who Ellanor C. Lawrence was and learn about the areas local and natural history. We provide hot dogs, buns, condiments, and s'mores. Feel free to bring your own drinks and sides. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


House of Reptiles and Night Ride

(4-Adult) Amazing reptiles call our park home. Play games, test your courage with a touch table and see these wonderful creatures up close. Calm your nerves by roasting s'mores at a campfire while listening to stories and then join us for a refreshing wagon ride through the autumn woods. Don't miss this Falltastic program!


Native American Campfire Cookout

(5-Adult) Do you harvest and cook your own food? Discover how native people used the resources where they lived to survive and learn some easy recipes. Discover some native recipes and cooking techniques as you help prepare some native dishes to taste. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Don't miss this Falltastic program!


Nocturnal Hunters

(4-Adult) Join a naturalist for a night hike to learn about the parks nocturnal animals. Catch and release fireflies, locate bats with a bat detector and search for other live animals. At the campfire roast marshmallows. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Owl Prowl and Campfire

(8-Adult) Join a naturalist for a night hike to learn about the different owls that can be found in the park. Listen for calls and learn about how owls can navigate the night. Then enjoy s'mores at a campfire. Don't miss this Falltastic program!
