All About Bats Campfire

(4-Adult) Several bat species flit in the Virginia sky. Look for them as we head to our campfire where you learn fun bat facts and lore plus enjoy an American Indian story of how bats got their wings. Toast marshmallows over the embers. Cancelled in case of inclement weather. Minimum age to attend program is 4 yrs. Children must attend with an adult and all attendees must register.


All About Owls Campfire

(4-Adult) Barred owls inhabit our stream valley parks. Learn to identify these owls from other native owls while enjoying the campfire. Toast marshmallows over the embers. Canceled in case of inclement weather. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Astronomy Festival

(3-Adult) Enjoy activities including guided star gazing, looking through the telescope, and listening to ancient stories about the constellations round the campfire. Participate in other activities and games throughout the evening. Hot chocolate and snacks available for purchase. Canceled if raining or snowing.


Bears in our Backyard Campfire

(4-Adult) Have you seen a bear in Fairfax County? Identify bear habitat, life cycles, sights and sounds and learn to be a good bear neighbor. This program concludes with a s'mores campfire.


Burke Lake Survival Camp (9-13 yrs)

(9-13 yrs.) Join Virginia Outside to learn outdoor survival skills through teambuilding activities, fun games and challenging tasks. Campers will participate in fishing, shelter building, water navigation and paddling, fire building, wilderness first-aid, and orienteering. Campsite preparation will complete the camp for a campfire lunch provided on Thursday. Once registered, download camp forms from website.


Camp Riverbend (6-11 yrs.)- spring

(6-11 yrs.) In this week-long outdoor sampler, campers will participate in rock climbing, meeting our exhibit animals, fishing, hiking, exploring wildlife and taking a park wagon ride. Different themes each day teach primitive skills while enjoying outdoor recreation and a campfire cookout. Once registered, download camp forms from website.


Campfire at the Mill - Historic Games

(5-Adult) Twilight play at Colvin Run Mill. We'll light a campfire, play with 19th century toys and games, then finish the evening with s'mores. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Campfire Fridays

(3-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire the whole family can enjoy. During the program we will explore the wonders of our natural world. Our programs may include nature walks, interactive activities, animal presentations, or other opportunities to learn about nature and our place in it. Includes S’mores. Topics vary by date. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Campfire Night Hike - Predators at Night

(4-Adult) Enjoy a night hike to learn about nocturnal hunters. Listen to taped calls of owls and coyotes and possibly catch a glimpse of them in the forest. End the evening with s'mores round the campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.


Campfire Saturday - Spring

(4-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire the whole family can enjoy. During the program we will explore the wonders of our natural world. Our programs may include nature walks, interactive activities, animal presentations, or other opportunities to learn about nature and our place in it. Includes S’mores. Topics include 3/25 Spring Awakens; 4/1 Tricksters in Nature; 5/6 Nocturnal Symphony. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Campfire Saturdays-Stargazing (3-Adult)

(3-Adult) Enjoy a stroll along the lake shores and learn about the constellations, their stories and other night-sky features. Our astronomical naturalist identifies the stars for you and will have some telescopes for you to use. The program concludes with a campfire. S'mores ingredients provided; hot dogs welcome. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Campfire Wagon Ride

(2-Adult) Enjoy an intimate after hours experience at the farm as day turns to night. Register for a wagon ride time and enjoy the bonfire after your ride. Staff will provide marshmallows for roasting but feel free to bring along any other treat for yourselves.
