Camp Riverbend (6-11 yrs.)- spring

(6-11 yrs.) In this week-long outdoor sampler, campers learn primitive skills, get to meet our exhibit animals, enjoy fishing, hiking, exploring wildlife and a park wagon ride. Different themes each day to include outdoor recreation, primitive skills, wildlife, water & fishing and campfire cookout. Bring snack, lunch and drink. Once registered, download camp forms from website.


Campfire Fridays

(3-Adult) Join us for an evening campfire the whole family can enjoy. During the program we will explore the wonders of our natural world. Our programs may include nature walks, interactive activities, animal presentations, or other opportunities to learn about nature and our place in it. Includes S’mores. Topics vary by date. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Campfire Night Hike - Predators at Night

(4-Adult) Enjoy a night hike to learn about nocturnal hunters. Listen to taped calls of owls and coyotes and catch a glimpse of them in the forest. End the evening with s'mores round the campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult registered in the program.


Campfire Safety for Boy Scouts

Learn how to safely build and enjoy a campfire, learn fire safety skills and receive the Smokey Bear Pledge certificate. Enjoy a brief woodland walk and make s'mores! Children must be accompanied by adult.


Campfire Safety for Families

(4-Adult) Families learn how to safely build and enjoy a campfire plus make s'mores. Not appropriate for children under 4 yrs. Children must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered in the program.


Campfire Saturdays-Stargazing (3-Adult)

(3-Adult) Enjoy a stroll along the lake shores and learn about the constellations, their stories and other night-sky features. Our astronomical naturalist identifies the stars for you and will have some telescopes for you to use. The program concludes with a campfire. S'mores ingredients provided; hot dogs welcome. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Campfire Your Way

(All ages) Join a naturalist for a private nature program at the Woodland Wildlife Tree Sculpture about the curious and creative survival strategies of nocturnal animals. Then take a 25 minute nighttime hike to a cozy campfire in the woods where you will enjoy toasting marshmallows. Up to 9 people in your family or COVID bubble group. Masks required. Bring a flashlight. Restroom available. Ideal for celebrating a family birthday. Rescheduled in event of severe weather. Contact kim.young@fairfaxcounty.gov for additional date options.


Courtship in the Animal World Campfire

(4-Adult) What does it take to attract a mate in the animal world. Turtles, frogs, insects, birds and even fish all have unique techniques for finding that special someone. Learn about these unique specialties and enjoy a short hike before sitting around a campfire to roast marshmallows. Canceled in case of inclement weather. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.


Family Fun Campfire

(All Ages) Join a naturalist for a private nature hike exploring the survival skills of our park’s evening residents. Finish around a campfire toasting marshmallows. 


Flying Squirrel Campfire

(4-Adult) Enjoy an evening around the campfire, toasting marshmallows over the embers and learn about flying squirrels that live in our area. Cancelled in case of inclement weather. Minimum age to attend program is 4 yrs. Children must attend with an adult and all attendees must register.


Hidden Treasure Pirate Camp (4-8 yrs.)

(4-8 yrs.) Dress up like a pirate for camp and follow clues to search for natural treasures in the park. Campers make their own treasure chest, sail boats in the stream and meet live animals. Activities include enjoying puppet shows, toasting treats at a campfire and playing games like “Avoid the Shark” and “Walk the Plank.” Camp will be held outdoors. Owl Campfire and Hike

(3-Adult) Join Hidden Pond naturalist for a story about Owls by the campfire and a walk to search for evidence of owls in the park. All Attendees must register.


Winter Wonder Campfire

(4-Adult) Bundle up and discover animal strategies for surviving winter. Meet some exhibit animals and find out their strategies. Enjoy s'mores.
