(All Ages) Enjoy a tour of historic Colvin Run Mill built c.1811. The Mill is a tribute to industrial and mechanical innovation, and to the working people who made it happen. Learn the importance of the Mill to the multifaceted, surrounding community. Explore why our operational, water-powered gristmill is a prime example of how people, technology, and society rely upon each other for survival and success. See how the miller continues to make flour and cornmeal today. The tour covers the main grinding floor and the basement, including the gear pit. This tour is ADA compliant. (5-8 yrs.) Pack up your favorite doll and experience the life of an American girl growing up in different eras in history. Bring these times to life with your doll through activities, costumes, crafts and themed games in a beautiful historic setting. No camp July 3.

(3.5-6 yrs.) Explore the wild world of dinosaurs and other reptiles with Abrakadoodle. Experiment with a variety of art techniques while you learn about science, technology, engineering and math concepts used to study extinct animals. No camp June 19.

(8-12 yrs.) Discover what it was like to grow up in the past. Explore history through simple recipes, heritage crafts and games. Make food the way your ancestors did and be entertained with historical games and crafts as you become a time-traveler through history.

This program satisfies most of the requirements to earn the badge. Scouts must complete all prework before the start of class. (16-Adult) In this program, learn the basics of using plants from the garden to make oils, tinctures and vinegars. Learn how different infusions extract different properties from the plants and how plants have been used in traditional medicines for healing and strengthening the immune system. Participants will go home with one tincture, one vinegar and one oil.

(6-Adult) Our Continental Army, formed in 1775, was created from colonial volunteers. Farmers and tradespeople learned to follow directions, march and fight as one unit. Join us as we practice drilling and talk about the Army's struggles and successes around the campfire.

(7-Adult) Discover historic and modern engineering through demonstrations, hands-on activities and experiments. Engineers build on the work of past engineers to solve problems in the present and future

(6-12 yrs.) Spark curiosity and deepen appreciation for science through engaging and hands-on learning experiences. Stemtree curriculum empowers campers to become confident scientific thinkers by exploring the core principles of science. Campers will code in either Python or Scratch based on their grade levels. Scratch is a highly visual programming language suitable for younger students. Python is one of the most popular programming languages used in data sciences and machine learning. Previous participants will continue learning new STEM concepts.

(All Ages) Bring Dad or Grandad out to see and hear 19th century technology at work. The miller will be grinding, conditions permitting. Please call the site to confirm. Free admission for Fathers and Grandfathers.

(14-Adult) African Americans' labor, experience, and knowledge were crucial to 19th-century grist milling. Explore a historic mill as you discuss the contributions of African American millers in Fairfax County. This program links to the VA250 and Fairfax 250 commemoration.

(3-Adult) Enjoy a summer afternoon like the miller's family did in the 1800s. Churn and eat ice cream. Play with historic games and toys, then make a toy to take home.

(10-Adult) Watch an outdoor screening of Sense of Sensibility (1995) at the 19th century gristmill. Bring your own blanket or low lawn chair. Refreshments and concessions will be available for purchase. The Miller's House Exhibit will be open for self-guided tours at 7:30pm and will close at the start of the film. The film will start at sunset (8:30pm).

(7-Adult) Discover our native trees, how they helped people of the past and how we use them in the modern day. Learn how to use the iNaturalist app to identify things you find along the way. Each walk will feature a different theme and may include different trees, seasonal features like fruit and flowers and a variety of uses.

(16-Adult) Learn the basic skills and shapes to felt wool into animals, and practice as you make needle felted birds to take home. Spend an afternoon learning and creating animals that make wonderful decorations and gifts. All supplies for two birds included. Take home a felting kit to continue crafting at home.

(6-12 yrs.) Explore a wide range of concepts from electricity to electronics with hands-on activities and experiments with Stemtree. Robots inspire young engineers to learn skills and apply science knowledge in computer programming, model construction, circuits and problem-solving.

(4-Adult) Explore Colvin Run Mill as you learn about the milling process from beginning to end. Learn hands-on how we clean, mill and sift grains using antique equipment. All participants get to take home a souvenir sample bag of what is milled during class. This program links to the VA250 and Fairfax250 commemoration.

(6-10 yrs.) Discover how flight developed from birds and insects to balloons and kites, then to planes and rockets. Conduct hands-on experiments to see how lift, drag, weight and thrust make flying possible.

(6-10 yrs.) Get ready for a little deception, secret messaging and eavesdropping. Learn the science of spying and create your own secret messages and practice a few of these skills yourself.

(6-10 yrs.) Try six simple machines that operate alone or together to make work easier. Come experiment with wheels and axels, levers, inclined planes, pulleys, wedges and screws for a morning of fun work.

(21 yrs.+) Follow whiskey's journey from grain to glass. Explore the 19th century gristmill cracking the needed wheat, learn about the distilling process and taste local spirits. The historic relationship between mills and distilleries was as important then, as it is today. Snacks will be provided. This program links to the VA250 and Fairfax250 commemoration.

(3-Adult) Bring your child to the mill and celebrate Spring. We’ll have tea, savory and sweet treats and play 19th century games. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

(1-4 yrs.) Get moving with your toddler as we explore the park using our senses. Each month, we will make, taste, dance, walk, sing and tell stories. Different topics and activities every session.

(9-Adult) Join wool artisan Lisa Neel, co-founder of Twins N Needles, and discover how to process wool for knitting or craft projects. Practice cleaning and carding wool and how to use a drop spindle to create yarn.
